How to Start a Journaling Practice (Even if You Think You are not a Writer)

When to Start?

-Hannah Darnell, RN

Starting to journal is unique to each person, though I'm partial to encouraging young adults to write for stress relief. There are so many milestones happening at this stage of life — marriage, college, degrees, careers, babies, divorce, crisis, deaths, traumatic events reemerging. The list goes on and on.

As a semi-young adult myself, there's so much going on in life that I write it down and still forget it... even with digital calendars and AI minder-workflows.

Just pick up your favorite collectible pen and get to writing your amazing story. There's no reason to delay.

What Do I Write?

When it comes to journaling, you may practice this a few times per week as I recommend in my course & journal. There's no topic or grammatical formula to follow (just no algebra allowed 🙂).

In all seriousness, writing from your heart and in private is therapeutic. There's no right or wrong way to do it.

You can date entries, start with "Dear Diary," "Dear Journal," and so on. Or, better yet — my grandma bought me a hardcover journal with an angel on the cover and a quote on the front: "Angels on Assignment" 😈 and I believe each lined inner page was headed "Dear God." Make it your own.

A few key points to start:

  • Write about a silly moment in your day — a trip, your pants ripping
  • What you're feeling — do you recognize what defines an emotion?
  • Write uplifting character traits and adjectives about yourself
  • What are you grateful for?

Are You Really Not a Writer?

Nonsense, everyone is a writer. Okay, not everyone is Edgar Allan Poe, Shakespeare, or Terri Blackstock — I think you catch my drift 💨. Just give it a try. You might surprise yourself.

You have a story to tell — perhaps several waiting to be told. Let me help you write one today. Writefully Yours is adding a couple of new services and business twists coming soon.

Memories start coming alive. Your imagination runs wild like a cheetah on the prowl. Check out the Healing Amongst Words course and the Penning What Matters Most journal, and give journaling a go today.
